DIY: ecological decorating ideas for Christmas

Here at Azul Mejicano, we pride ourselves on the fact that our handbags are not only 100% handmade, which makes each piece one-of-a-kind, but we also sell handbags that are made out of organic and recyclable materials. Most of our products are made of palm, and we also combine weaving with recycled plastic to take care of our environment.

Under this premise, we support DIY crafts that give a second purpose to all kinds of materials. This Christmas, we encourage you to get your hands a little dirty and make your own holiday decorations. Besides being incredibly fun, you will save money and help the environment! Here are some ideas to replicate:

Choose a natural tree

Natural pine trees are clearly the best choice since they are 100% biodegradable. Plus, they benefit the environment because they provide us with oxygen and absorb the CO2 of the atmosphere. And let's face it, they smell great! Just keep in mind that after the holidays, you must research a responsible way to replant them (they are native). You can also make compost.

Say no to wrapping paper

Wrapping paper is so wasteful… Why not use recycled paper, like a neutral color paper with no print, and decorate with a DIY fun bow? You can do this with cinnamon sticks, mistletoe, candy canes, pine cones, etc. You can also reuse things like newspapers, music sheets, book pages, or other themed papers you find around.

Paper maché spheres

Using the paper maché technique (paper stripes, water, and glue) start making round spheres of all sizes. Don't worry about perfection, the whole idea is to have something handmade. After they get dry, you can paint them however you like, or even add inside jokes. Finally, put strings on them to hang them on your tree.

Only natural materials on the table

Instead of buying plastic centerpieces, coasters, and plate holders, incorporate natural things at the dining table! Make a centerpiece out of mint or pine leaves and add mistletoe and pine cones. And for coasters and plate holders, ask someone who knows how to cut wood in slices. Everyone will love these original and rustic decorations!

Make your own stockings

Gather your family and make a day out of this amazing activity. You can use all kinds of fabrics, just make sure they are organic. At sustainable stores, you can find cotton, linen, hemp, bamboo, and other fabrics that can help you make your stockings. Let each member of the family decorate with their own style and hang them proudly in your living room!

What other DIY eco-friendly decorations come to mind for this Christmas? Don’t forget to share them with us!
