Women artisans, hands that support the family economy

When we talk about Mexican crafts, it’s almost impossible not to mention Mexican women, most specifically Oaxacan women, for they are the ones who play the most important role in this amazing process.

The manufacture of artisanal products is not a modern thing, it has actually been around for centuries. Since pre-Hispanic times, people have made out of scratch different pieces to portray their beliefs, connect to the world, and decorate their spaces.

We are so lucky that, until this day, indigenous communities have passed from generation to generation the techniques that make different crafts possible. It should be mentioned that most of these techniques are basically achieved by using their hands, but at other times artisans may use rudimentary instruments.

In Oaxaca, women are the ones who keep this tradition alive, since it is their main source of income and an essential part of their idiosyncrasy. Therefore, Oaxacan women are usually the head of the family, the main provider in their families, and the ones who contribute more to the state’s economy. Crafts like a loom, clay, and palm weaving are very popular, and you can spot them at the “tianguis” all around the city.

Meet our Mexican artisans

The products that we sell here at Azul Mejicano are not only beautiful but unique. And they would not be possible without the passion and talent of these amazing Mexican artisans:

Sara Flores: she learned the craft when she was 5, and she loves to experiment with new materials and shapes that no one else has in Oaxaca.

Marcela García: embroidery palm leaves is a technique that her mother passed down. She has more than 35 years of experience weaving fine and rustic palm leaves. Now she is teaching her own daughter Melissa.

Wendolyn Martínez: she describes the profession as a legacy from her parents. She is the third generation dedicated to promoting Oaxaca through her products.

Alicia Pinacho: she is part of Amatlán Group, which consists of women that are recognized for the quality of their handcrafted work. She has been doing this for more than 20 years, and she loves it.

If you wish to donate a little extra to support Mexican artisans, you can do so at the link before or at checkout. Thank you for keeping alive this wonderful craft and helping Oaxacan women support their families and communities!
