Now that the holidays are around the corner, people tend to be more generous. And don’t get us wrong, giving out to charity during Christmas Time is great, since most vulnerable people are in need of a warm place to sleep and a nice meal. But today we want to talk about how to practice solidarity on a daily basis.
Here are some things you can start doing to have a better attitude toward others all year long…
How many times have you said the phrase “Let me know if you need anything”? And how many times has someone actually reached out to you? The truth is that most people are embarrassed to ask for help. So instead of talking, start walking the walk! Avoid saying this phrase and just help… Just pick up your neighbor’s kids from school when they can’t, just spend time with a friend who’s mourning, and just mow the lawn even though it’s not your turn.
Donating money is a very efficient and fast way to help. One thing you can do is donate to a different charity each month. In Azul Mejicano, besides the fact that every purchase helps Oaxaca women support their families, you can also make extra donations at checkout for Oaxaca orphan children in need.
If right now you can’t afford to make a monetary donation, you can always offer your time as a volunteer in plenty of nonprofits. You can involve your whole family and that way teach them about solidarity. From serving food to immigrants to reforesting a natural park, volunteer work can be very fulfilling.
A great way to practice solidarity with the environment is to start at home. You can encourage your family to start separating the trash in order to recycle more. Also, you can urge them to think about ways of reusing waste before they throw it in the trash. And with organic waste, you can make compost.
Sometimes we think that we don’t have what it takes to help others. But the truth is that sharing our talents is enough help. For example, if you love to read, you can start a book club for disadvantaged communities. If you love to bake, you can organize a bake sale in your garage to collect enough money to buy something the community needs. Think about what your talent is and discover how you can put it to good use.
What other ways do you think you can practice solidarity every day?
