How to teach children the importance of donation?

Empathy, as some say, is not necessarily taught, but trapped. That is why it’s never too early to start talking about concepts like charities, volunteering, and donations with your children. It’s no secret that every parent wants to raise thoughtful and generous kids who understand the importance of giving back. So how can you get started without overwhelming them and still get them excited about getting involved? Here are some ideas:

Lead by example

“Children see, children do”. So take advantage of this phase and make sure they see you being generous. Maybe when you are in the car, you can drop money into a charity box. Another idea is to sign a petition for a good cause on the street. Remember to always explain what you just did and why it is important and relevant to you and the community.

Let them tag along

Make them feel important and mature by involving them in some activity you signed up for as a volunteer. For example, if you are picking up trash in a park or at the beach, bring the kids along and let them participate. Just don’t forget to all wear gloves!

Make a fun activity out of donating clothes

Making a depuration of their clothes is something that they would have to do anyway, so try making it a fun activity instead of a chore. Put tags in 2 big boxes, labeled “Keep” and “Donate”. Give a little prize to whoever finishes first or donates more things.

Make them have a “share piggy bank”

Besides their normal piggy bank, introduce to them the idea of having another one, just for donations. This will help them understand better the concept of money donations. They can maybe save 20% of their allowance for this piggy bank. And when they raise enough, let them decide the charity they want to donate the money to. That way they will feel more responsible, and they will research different associations.

Find opportunity in the bad

Whenever a natural disaster takes place, or a tragedy strikes the neighborhood, it’s a good way to have a talk with them and explain the importance of helping out, raising money or food, and getting your hands dirty trying to make those in need a little bit less sad.

Teach them to be conscious consumers in the future

Teach them from a young age that it is very important the decisions we make every time we buy something. Try to purchase products from brands that have a social impact, that support local communities, or donate part of their gains to charities.
