When we think about Oaxaca’s tourism, different things come to mind, such as the amazing food, the delicious mezcal, the colorful streets, the warm people, and the beautiful beaches. But one thing stands out among the others: the wonderful crafts that we find throughout the whole state.
The Oaxacan crafts attract tourists like no other thing. From alebrijes and clay to carpets and palm-weaved accessories, crafts tell a story about tradition, culture, and ethnic costumes.
It is estimated that there are about half a million artisans registered in Oaxaca. And a high percentage of that are women. Although their art is well known, the truth is that these women face a lot of challenges regarding the craft. Here are some examples:
It is no secret that big fashion corporations offer similar and cheaper products. People want to spend less and get faster results, but they forget about sustainability and charity. When you buy a handbag from Azul Mexicano you help Oaxacan women, so they can keep preserving the traditional craft of palm weaving.
Another challenge the Oaxacan artisans face every day is a bargain. It is common to spot foreign tourists in the local markets trying to bargain the price of crafts. And because the artisans are in need of money to support their families, they often cave and accept it. This is a bad habit that should be prohibited when it comes to traditional crafts. Here at Azul Mejicano we help Oaxacan children by donating to a charity that gets them shoes and blankets.
Sadly, most Oaxacan artisan families are from poor communities that find it really hard to get access to the internet. This makes it almost impossible for them to promote their products. This is why we created Azul Mejicano. We like to think of this brand not only as an e-commerce but a platform that Oaxacan artisans can use to share their story and their art.
