Did you know that the Southern region of Oaxaca is known as the “Sierra Sur”? It translates as the South Mountain since it is a place full of mountains and forest. Fun fact: it is considered the most important resource reservation of the whole state and it embraces four districts.
Today we want to share with you some of the most iconic traditions of the Southern region so you make sure to spot them on your next visit to Oaxaca:
This region in Oaxaca is responsible for producing most of the corn and beans, so you will be trying a lot of traditional dishes like tlayudas, the better Oaxacan version of pizza. This region also produces a lot of coffee, so don’t forget to try a cup of local coffee. Lastly, don’t miss out on the yellow bread you will definitely spot at every market.
On a more artisanal level, there are a lot of Oaxacan families of the South that produce mezcal and aguardiente, another type of agave. Don’t be afraid if they tell you to try it with a maguey worm, it is the traditional way of having it and it is delicious. You won’t be sorry!
The South is also popular for its beautiful traditional dances, such as the chilena and the sondango. You will spot this wonderful dance at the Guelaguetza, a big summer festival celebrated in the region.
If you want to take with you a traditional piece of clothing, you can buy at a local market a drawer blouse (that’s what they call them). The women also tend to wear long colorful skirts that have a lot of movement (for dancing). This region is also known for selling nice, quality hats.
Last but not least, we want to show off the fact that the women artisans for Azul Mejicano are originally from the Sierra Sur of Oaxaca and we couldn’t be more proud. The palm-weaving technique that they use to manufacture the handbags is a process that has been passed from generation to generation. Make sure you navigate through our site and discover the beautiful products they make, and help them and their families with your purchase!
